The year 2021 ended with various cyber security challenges such as phishing attacks, exploitation of remote work, cloud adoption outpaced security, the rise of ransomware, DDoS attacks on vaccination portal, focus on mobile devices by hackers for exploitation. There were 873 attacks recorded by BGD eGov CIRT. BGD eGov CIRT published Malware Threat Intelligence Report for Bangladesh Context – 2021, Indicator of compromise (IoC) of Kaseya VSA Supply-Chain Ransomware Attack, Apache Log4j2 is vulnerable to RCE via JDBC Appender when an attacker controls configuration on its website to make the people aware of the threats. A special webinar on 4IR Opportunities and Challenges, Hosted by BGD e-GOV CIRT was also organized to create awareness Mr. Tarique M Barkatullah, Project Director of BGD e-GOV CIRT and Director of Bangladesh Computer Council, is presenting the National Cyber Drill 2021 event operations to Mr. Junaid Ahmed Palak MP, State Minister of Information and Communication Technology and Mr. Omar S Ishrak, Chief Executive Officer of Intel Corporation, Bangladesh. among the people on the myths and challenges of Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Three cyber drills were organized in the year 2021. The drills showed improvements in the cyber security awareness. More teams and participants participated in the drill. The skills of the participants were reflected during these drills. The analysis of the results has given insights to the areas of improvements and required trainings. The report is available in this edition of the magazine. The year 2021 also saw the publication and official launching of Cyber security strategy 2021-25 and the guidelines for Critical Information Infrastructures. The work to draft the Digital Forensic Lab guidelines was also started and the draft is currently undergoing stake holders review. The guideline will be ready for publication in the year 2022. Total of 851 incident reports were provided to 32 government organizations, 70 cyber sensor reports were sent to selected Critical Information Infrastructures, 74 Threat Intelligence Reports to 31 government organizations, 31 banks and financial institutions, 12 non government organizations. These efforts have helped the organizations face the challenges posed vulnerabilities. In the case of innovation BGD eGov CIRT has successfully launched its own meeting Platform and e-KYC software. The BGD eGov CIRT is working on few other innovative ideas which may see the realization in the product forms. The continuous vigilance by the BGD eGov CIRT has led to the improvement of Bangladesh in Cyber Security Index by NCSI, Estonia and ITU. The country is in the top position amongst the SAARC countries. The new year brings new hopes of improvements.
BGD e-GOV CIRT organized National Cyber Drill (NCD) 2021 on Digital Bangladesh Day. The expected outcome of this event was to enhance capability to handle any cyber security issues and build resilience against the growing cyber threats. Worldwide demand for skilled and professional cyber security specialists have increased. To increase the number of skilled workers in the country, CIRT organizes the Cyber Drills. University Students, Professionals working in the Financial Institutions, Government Organizations and enthusiasts as Individual Teams participated in the NCD 2021 event. Total 396 teams with 1950+ participants from all over the country joined the two days Cyber Drill contest.
